Playing poker in Las Vegas; how to find your favorite poker room
There you are: your first time in Las Vegas. 100 Dollar bills are burning in your pockets and you are ready to play some poker! The question is: where to play? There are dozens of poker rooms in Las Vegas and not two of them are the same. We will give you a few tips on how to choose a poker room in ‘Sin City’.
It begins with choosing the right hotel for your stay. We recommend to pick a hotel in the center of the strip. From there the best and biggest casino’s are all within walking distance, so you don’t have to take a taxi several times a day to change casino’s.
As a rule of thumb: the bigger casino’s have the better poker rooms. In the smaller casino’s there is a smaller amount of tables to choose from so a lot of times there is no choice if you don’t like your table. Also, a lot of smaller casino’s are paying certain players a few bucks per hour to make sure that there is always play at their tables. These ‘grinders’ are not the best players to play against in general. They don’t play a lot of pots and they don’t want to invest a whole lot of money if they don’t have the nuts. Not only that, but the bigger casino’s also have better poker room managers in general because they can pay higher wages. Good managers listen better to player wishes and also take care of a better ‘environment of play’.
Ask around. One moment the good games are in a certain casino and the next moment it switched to another casino. An example: last year, the Hard Rock Casino introduced the ‘Trash Talk Tuesdays’ where players were allowed to trash talk, slow roll etc etc. This proved to be really successful and soon enough the poker room was filled with recreational tourists and ‘one-time players’ which wanted to give this fun concept a try. As a result the games were really good at the Hard Rock for some time. However, soon the good players found out that there were a lot of bad players over there at Tuesday and also went over there at Tuesdays. So keep your ears open and talk to the locals to hear about these things.
These were only a few tips to help you choose your favorite poker room in Las Vegas. Don’t forget to have some fun while you’re there. Some of the poker players forget with all the poker going on that there is more to do in the ‘City that never sleeps’:).
