For most poker players, poker tournaments are the cream of the crop. They prefer it over cash games because of the excitement and competition a big tournament can bring.

Poker Tournaments increased its popularity in the last few years. Most of it is due to the growing number of online poker players. The high growth of players is due to the fact that not every poker player can go to tournaments in land based casinos. It’s just not practical for beginner players to go to specific tournaments on a specific date and location.

But at the online poker rooms you can just sit on a table at any time you please. Not to mention the fact that while playing in a tournament online, you can have your strategy guides and other reading material or odd calculators. Another big difference is the fact that you are placing a small bet compared to the amounts you can win. The payouts are a lot higher and can not be compared with other card games.

The most famous online poker tournament is the Pokerstars’ Sunday Million. This weekly tournament takes place every Sunday at 16:30 ET and has a guaranteed prize pool of a whopping $1,5 million. The winner of every edition takes home at least $240,00, but gets even more than that most of the time.

Of course, Pokerstars holds a vast amount of daily satellites for the Sunday Million to serve the players with a smaller bankroll as the buy-in is $215. The satellites are running daily and have different buy-ins. Stars even introduced a ‘steps system’, which means you can buy in at the step that you like. The higher the step, the bigger the buyin. At the highest step, the tournament tickets will be given away to the winners.

The Sunday Million is not the only big weekly Sunday tournament at Pokerstars. At 13:00 there is the Sunday Warm-Up, to get in the right poker mood. The buy-in is with $215 the same though. Got kicked out early of the Sunday Million? Also not a problem, as you can register for the Sunday Second Chance that starts at 18:30 ET. If you bring enough cash, you can play big tournaments all Sunday at Pokerstars!

Of course the other poker sites are not sitting still either. Party Poker has his own big Sunday tourney with their Sunday One Million Guaranteed. It also starts at 16:30 ET and of course it’s possible to qualify in smaller tournaments.

With the big success of the Sunday tournaments at Pokerstars and PartyPoker, the other poker rooms followed suit and started copying the successful concept. Now every site seems to have his own Sunday Major. Sites like Bodog, Titan Poker and Ultimate Bet all offer tournaments that offer great value for money. Because of the huge guaranteed prize pools, you sometimes come across tournaments with a big overlay. An overlay means that there are not enough players to bring in the needed money to meet the guaranteed prize pool. The poker site themselves then has to pay up, so you get better value for your money.
